MOLE 1961
The furniture comes from a commission by photographer Otto Stupakoff. He wanted a sofa in his studio to sprawl out like a sultan and Sergio Rodrigues responded with a robust, comfortable sofa that expresses Brazil in trait and identity – the Mole sofa.
The armchair is a reduction of the sofa made in 1957. In 1961 it was edited by the designer to participate in the International Furniture Competition in Cantú, Italy. There it won first place and its glory, competing among 438 models from 27 countries.
"In the Mole Armchair you don't sit, you feast," wrote journalist Sérgio Augusto. In a 1975 book, critic and designer Clement Meadmore called it "one of the 30 most important seats of the 20th century." The Mole armchair is also part of the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
